Germany Calls for UN Action on Iran Conflict, Hormuz Disruption
Ahead of traveling to New York for a UN Security Council session, Johann Wadephul stressed the need for the organization to take center stage in managing international disputes. “To resolve pressing issues of peace and security, the United Nations must become the linchpin of contemporary conflict diplomacy,” he said, according to reports.
He also voiced concern over internal divisions within the Security Council, criticizing certain members for preventing decisive action. He warned that such deadlock is unsustainable at a time when multiple global crises demand urgent attention.
Wadephul highlighted the economic consequences of Iran’s actions, noting that the effective blockade of the Strait of Hormuz is disrupting international markets. He pointed out that vulnerable nations are bearing the brunt, with rising risks to global food security.
“I will therefore advocate today in New York for the UN Security Council to live up to its role,” he said. “If the UN Security Council assumes responsibility now, it will also strengthen the international order,” he added.
The strategic waterway has remained largely closed since the outbreak of conflict involving the United States and Israel on Feb. 28. Although active fighting has paused, diplomatic efforts are ongoing to reach a lasting resolution.
